What is the CBSE Class 12 Supplementary Exam?

The CBSE Class 12 Supplementary Examination (previously known as the Compartment Examination) is a special examination conducted by CBSE for students who could not pass one or more subjects in the annual board examination or wish to improve their performance in one subject.

For the 2026 session, the Class 12 Supplementary Examination will be conducted on 28 July 2026 based on the 2025–26 CBSE syllabus.

If a student has already secured passing marks in the practical or internal assessment component of a subject, those marks are generally carried forward, and the student is required to appear only in the theory examination, wherever applicable.

Who is Eligible for the CBSE Class 12 Supplementary Exam 2026?

CBSE has specified the eligibility criteria for different categories of students in the official Supplementary Examination circular. The following students can apply for the examination.

1. Students Declared Compartment in One Subject

Regular students who appeared in the CBSE Class 12 Board Examination 2026 through CBSE-affiliated schools and whose result has been declared Compartment are eligible to appear in the Supplementary Examination.

These students can apply only in the subject in which they have been placed under the Compartment category.

2. Students Who Appeared with Six Subjects and Got Compartment in Two Subjects

Some students appear for six subjects instead of the usual five.

If such a student has been placed in the Compartment category in two subjects, CBSE allows them to appear in only one of those two subjects in the Supplementary Examination.

Students should carefully select the subject while submitting their application through their school.

3. Students Who Passed After Replacement of a Failed Subject

CBSE allows students appearing with six subjects to pass by replacing one failed subject with another passed subject under its subject replacement policy.

If you passed the Class 12 Board Examination 2026 after such a replacement, you can still appear in the failed subject under the Improvement of Performance category, provided that subject is included in the Supplementary Examination schedule.

This gives students an opportunity to improve their academic record without affecting their overall pass status.

4. Students Who Passed but Want to Improve Their Marks

Students who have passed the Class 12 Board Examination 2026 can also appear in the Supplementary Examination for Improvement of Performance.

However, there are certain conditions:

  • Improvement is permitted in only one subject.
  • The subject must have been appeared for in the Main Examination.
  • The subject must be included in the list of subjects scheduled for the Supplementary Examination.

This facility is useful for students who wish to improve their percentage for college admissions, scholarships, or future career opportunities.

5. Private Candidates Appearing for the Third and Final Chance

Students who first appeared in the CBSE Class 12 Board Examination 2025, were declared Compartment, failed to clear the subject in the 2025 Supplementary Examination (First Chance), and again could not pass in the 2026 Main Examination (Second Chance) are eligible to appear for their third and final chance.

Such candidates cannot apply through schools. They must apply only as Private Candidates through the online application process notified separately by CBSE (Please check here).

How Many Chances Does CBSE Give to Clear a Compartment?

CBSE provides a maximum of three opportunities to clear a compartment subject.

ChanceExamination
First ChanceSupplementary Examination 2026
Second ChanceMain Board Examination 2027
Third & Final ChanceSupplementary Examination 2027 (Private Candidate Only)

If a student is unable to clear the subject even after the third attempt, they are no longer eligible for another supplementary examination under the existing CBSE rules.

  • Students who failed in more subjects than permitted under CBSE's eligibility rules.
