The CBSE Class 10 First Board Examinations (also known as Main Board Examinations) conclude on 11 March 2026, and now many students are planning for the second board examinations—especially after that dangerous Mathematics paper on 17th Feb 2026! An essential part of planning for any exam is knowing the datesheet. The 2nd Board exam is tentatively scheduled to take place from 15th May 2026 to 1st June 2026.
In this post, I will provide a complete guide to the CBSE Class 10 2026 2nd Board Exam, covering the eligibility criteria, who should appear, the pros and cons, and, most importantly, the datesheet that brought you to this page. Read the article till the end to know everything about the 2nd Board Exam; all your queries will be solved by the time you reach the bottom. So, let us begin.
CBSE Class 10 2nd Board Exam Eligibility Criteria
In the Class 10 student community, this is the topic that causes the most confusion for students, teachers, and even principals. Do not worry. Here, I will explain the conditions needed to appear in the CBSE Class X Second Board Exam in easy-to-understand language.
Recently, CBSE released a clarifying notification regarding who can appear in the 2nd Board exam. As per the notification, the following candidates are eligible:
| Category | Eligible for Phase 2 (May/June)? |
| Passed Exam 1 | Yes, can improve up to 3 subjects. |
| Compartment | Yes, to clear failed subjects (1 or 2). |
| Essential Repeat | No, must wait for the 2027 cycle. |
| Absent in Exam 1 | No, appearing in Feb/March is mandatory. |
From the table above, it is clear that if you passed all subjects in the first board exam, you are eligible to appear in the 2nd board exam in a maximum of 3 subjects strictly for improvement. I know many of you just wanted to confirm this because you are thinking of re-appearing for the Maths exam!
Secondly, if you fail in 1 or 2 subjects, you are placed in the "Compartment" category. You can appear in the 2nd Board exam to clear those failed subjects, and you can also choose 1 or 2 passed subjects to reappear in to improve your marks. Remember, the total number of subjects you sit for cannot exceed 3.
Thirdly, if you fail in more than 2 out of 5 subjects in the first board exam, you will be declared an "Essential Repeat." You must wait for next year's first board exam and cannot use the Second Board exam to clear your subjects.
Fourthly, if a student did not appear in the first board exam, they will not be allowed to appear in the 2nd board exam. The CBSE board is very strict about this mandatory attendance condition.
Important Note for Students: The "Best-of-Two" Advantage Under the current NEP 2020 guidelines, CBSE will consider the higher score between your two attempts for the final marksheet. This means there is zero risk—even if you score lower in the second exam, your better score from the first exam remains valid. For example, if you got 85 in Maths in February but 52 in May, the 85 will be the final mark reflected on your Class 10 marksheet. It's a win-win situation!
Now you know the eligibility criteria. I hope you have an idea of whether you want to appear in the second exam or not. If you are still confused, do not worry. I have provided a checklist below to help you decide whether appearing in the second board exam is really worth your time and effort. Let's see:
Checklist: Should I Appear for the CBSE 2nd Board Exam?
If you check two or more boxes, appearing for the 2nd exam is likely a smart decision.
- [Yes/No] Are you unhappy with your Main exam score? If your marks are significantly lower than your school internals or pre-boards, this is your chance making up.
- [Yes/No] Do you need a higher percentage for a specific Class 11 Stream? If your dream school requires 85% for Science/Maths and you are currently at 78%, Second Board Exam can help you.
- [Yes/No] Did you face any personal issue during Main exam? If illness, anxiety, or a family emergency affected your performance in February/March, the May exam offers a great opportunity.
- [Yes/No] Are you aiming for an "Improvement" in 1, 2, or 3 subjects? Remember, you don't have to re-sit in all 3 papers; you can sit only for the subjects where you scored the lowest.
- [Yes/No] Is there a "Compartment" in 1 or 2 subjects? If you didn't pass a core subject, the 2nd board exam is your immediate path to passing Class 10 without losing a year.
By now, I am sure you have made your decision. Now, onto the most important part that brought you here: the datesheet.

What about Class 11th Admission?
Since the 2nd board exam is tentatively scheduled for May 15 to June 1, 2026, you need to know how it affects your Class 11 admissions.
CBSE Schools will start Class 11 admissions from the month of April 2026 on a provisional basis based on the main board exam results, which are expected in late April. You should take admission in Class 11th and, alongside that, prepare for and appear in the 2nd board exam if you choose to. Once the results of the 2nd board exam are declared, you can submit that final Class 10 marksheet to your school.
Important Note: Marks for internal assessments are not repeated. The internal marks you received in the first board exam will be carried over and added to your 2nd board exam theory score.
